Rabbinical Search

October 12, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Rabbi Franklin’s tenure ends in 2012. To ensure a seamless transition in rabbinic leadership, the President and Board have formed a search committee to define the recruitment process and identify candidates for the next Rabbi to lead our community.

Information on Rabbi Caplan

BMH-BJ Congregation
Rabbinic Search Committee Summary as November 2011
bmhbj.rsc@gmail.com

Full steam ahead: The search is on!

The Rabbinic Search Committee (RSC) has received and evaluated resumes from potential candidates and remains in contact with the placement offices of Yeshiva University, Yeshivat Chovevei Torah, the Union for Traditional Judaism, the Academy for the Jewish Religion, Hebrew College and other institutions, both nationally and internationally, representing orthodox, traditional and other denominations. As of January 15, 2012, 25 formal applications had been received from candidates in the United States, Canada, Israel, United Kingdom and Australia. The position of senior rabbi has been publicly advertised since September, which has resulted in applications from a number of highly qualified candidates. Given the volume and high quality of the candidates, the RSC has decided to discontinue further advertisements of the position. Where appropriate, video or in-person interviews have been conducted by the RSC with potentially suitable candidates and the RSC will determine whether to invite additional candidates to visit.

Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz has recently informed the RSC that he has withdrawn from consideration for a position with BMH-BJ Congregation. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.

The BMH-BJ community hosted the second rabbinical candidate, Rabbi Shamir Caplan and his wife Tania during the weekend of January 7th. The RSC was fortunate to be able to interview and invite Rabbi Caplan to visit while the Caplan family was visiting with Rabbi Caplan’s two brothers in Denver. Congregants had numerous opportunities to interact with the visiting couple including:

  • Morning Shabbat services in Sha’arei Simcha and the main sanctuary including a D’var Torah.
  • Kiddush in the social hall.
  • Friday night dinner and Shabbat lunch with congregants.
  • Afternoon services and Seuda Shlishit.
  • A discussion with parents and other community members at the start of the Mesorah Learning Center session on Sunday morning.
  • A meeting with DSY.
  • A meet-and-greet for all congregants on Wednesday evening.

All congregants were invited to participate in an online evaluation following the weekend visit. Forty-two congregants chose to participate in the survey. Responses to the survey were quite complimentary with significant positive responses (greater than 60% for all questions). Some sample positive comments:

“He welcomes anyone who wants to come in.”
“His personality would work well with anyone.”
“He understands the issues of the shul and is excited and energetic about making positive changes and finding ways to engage current and prospective families.”
“Really liked the whole Caplan family!”
“He is young, engaging, open and forthcoming in his opinions.”

The RSC will continue to evaluate the candidacy of Rabbi Caplan. This will include further conversations with the candidate, discussions with references and possibly additional interviews with the candidate.

On the weekend of January 28, the RSC and BMH-BJ Congregation hosted the third rabbinical candidate, Rabbi Ben Greenberg, his wife Sharon and their son, Yehuda.

As with the other candidates, the congregation had numerous opportunities to meet and visit with the couple.

All congregants were invited to once again participate in an online evaluation following the weekend visit. Fifty-five congregants chose to be a part of this survey. Responses to the survey were very complimentary and very positive (greater than 70% for all questions). Here is a sample of some comments:

“Very Personable. Outgoing, kind.”
“I loved how he expresses his openness to different levels of observance and felt that he was not judgmental in this regard.”
“Rabbi Greenberg was great. He was warm, totally engaging, there is no way  anyone would not love him!”

The RSC will continue to evaluate Rabbi Greenberg. They will have further discussions with him and his references and consider additional interviews.

Thank you to all who have taken the time to evaluate our candidates. This helps the search committee get a better sense of congregants’ needs and wishes.
